Nascent Blight

Mostly inspired by the in game note found after Emmrich becomes a lich. Partially inspired by a 'make him worse' trope. Questions and angst surrounding the transition to Lich life with the beginning whispers of things better left alone.

Setting: A few days after the Lich ritual

Pairing: Rook Thorne x Emmrich Volkarin

Rook wandered the upper floor of Emmrich’s study. The scratch of a pen sounded softly below. He took a moment to lean over the bannister and peer down, a soft smile teasing the edge of his lips at the sight of the necromancer. 

“Nearly finished, dearest.” Emmrich’s tone carried the hint of an echo, his glowing skeletal gaze kept locked to the documents at hand.

Rook nodded in reply, skin prickling. 

A mere glance and Emmrich felt it. Rook had been testing the theory in the days since the ritual. He was sure of it now, Emmrich could sense some change in the shift of awareness surrounding him. Was the light in the hollow skull for show? How did he…Rook shook his head, chewed at his cheek to chase off ruminations.

“If you’re in need of distraction, we have some new letters.”

Rook blinked, was he reading minds now too? Brow furrowed at the thought he drummed the bannister before leaving it and wandered to the desk near at hand. He smirked at the neat stack of papers, no need to ask where they might be, his beloved was precise in all things. A corner of that crooked smile remained until he picked up the first one.

Dear Professor Volkarin,

Your preserved heart, liver, lungs, and other diverse organs have been stored in this urn, as requested. Vorgoth and I hope that it will serve as a treasured memento in your many years to come.

Rook’s face fell, throat burning as he attempted to keep the gathering saliva down. So that was? Gut twisting he shifted only his eyes to look at the urn that had escaped notice. He had seen so many like it. It wouldn’t be out of place here…but this was? He dropped the letter in a hurried lurch towards the window, hand flying to cover his mouth. Rook flailed, then grasped the bannister white-knuckled. He pulled himself towards the window, steadied himself with a lean and breathed deep.

“Rook?!” Emmrich’s voice echoed with concern from below and was punctuated by the clatter of his chair. 

The immediate need to retch overcome, Rook rode out the following ebbs of nausea by closing his eyes and sticking his head out into the Fade. Listened to the quick thump of Emmrich’s footsteps on the stairs as he focused on controlling his breathing.

“I’m fine.” eyes still closed, he heard the steps drawing closer, “You don’t need to trouble yourself, it’s almost passed.” The nausea had lessened, he sniffed, the air had a subtle shift, it tasted different somehow. It was pleasant, almost, peppermint? Rook opened his eyes and turned to see Emmrich not far behind him, a whisper of green dancing on the necromancer’s fingers.

“Thank you Emmrich, it was, I was, just surprised is all. It’s lovely. A fine. Memorial?” 

“Darling.” Emmrich’s tone shook with grief Rook could feel burn into his chest, it overrode the sickness for a moment, and he sighed into a lean towards Emmrich’s waiting hands. Once in their grasp they set to massaging him, touching light and tracing on the neck, firm down the back and circling up.

“I’m sorry. That reaction wasn’t ideal.” Rook swallowed hard, eased into Emmrich’s attentions, and tried to ignore the sense of twisting regret in his stomach. “I didn’t expect the shock.”

“Please, my love,” Rook shivered as the skull’s echoing words went deep, “I should have considered how you might take such a keepsake given your discrepancies.” His hands squeezed Rook’s shoulders a last time, and then gently turned him around to look at him. 

“It was a foolish lack of thought.” Emmrich grumbled at himself, and then nodded his head towards the urn, “Truth be told. With everything else requiring our attention it had escaped mine at the moment.” He took a step apart and dipped his head, “Accept my apologies, I’ll have it stored elsewhere until…” Emmrich’s voice quaked, the sentence snapping into silence at the horror of uttering that future. 

For the barest second Rook grimaced, heart pounding at the reality they faced, but he forced out a smile and pursed air from his lips, “Don’t. Keep it where you like, it’s growing on me.” He touched Emmrich’s arm, leaned closer, the shock of Emmrich’s organs in a jar had passed. Looming horror remained, but that was something he could laugh with. His concern was for the despondent lich in front of him.

He reached out and grasped Emmrich’s shoulders, leaned down and crooked his head to catch the green flare still staring at the ground. Once he captured it with a soft stare he slowly lifted Emmrich’s gaze by standing up straight himself. 

“There we go.” Rook grinned and squeezed where held.

Emmrich’s head still dipped, locked now on Rook’s face.

“Can you preserve blighted organs? I could get a matching one, would it be different since I’m not a lich?” Rook mumbled, melting under the flickering green. Emmrich kept silent, subtle movements testament to his attentiveness and portraying worry. Rook let go of where he held and dusted where his hands had been. Withdrawing them to himself he scratched at his neck, “Or, I know you can’t blight the undead, stupid question, but can you undead the blighted?”

Emmrich’s jaw dropped a hair’s breadth, had he lungs to fill he’d have gasped, but silence hung between them as the mind raced for any possible answer. Rook carried on, words tumbling,

“I thought about it. If it’s possible I’d like that. The Nevarran options, that is. You don’t have to burn me alright? I do have questions,” he paused, wondering what to emphasis first, he wanted to let Emmrich know it’d be alright, he could grow fond of an urn, and he’d leave what he could in the hopes it might help mend his absence. Maybe a wisp would like his skull, barring blight restrictions. Before he could continue the thoughts out loud he was drawn into a tight embrace.

“Rook, dearest. Thank you.” Emmrich lessened the pressure in his arms bringing Rook to him, leaned back to take in more of him. Crooked his head at the sight, the movement soft and concerned, then raised his thumb to wipe clear the edge of the warden’s shining eye, “I’ll answer any of your questions.” 

Emmrich could feel Rook trembling in his arms. The Warden was still smiling, oblivious to the panic plain on his face. Emmrich kept a firm hold and spoke slow, “First, I need you to…”

“Can non mages do this lich thing?” Rook interjected with a shaky grin, his voice hushed from the startlingly short breath. He ignored the welling in his eyes. Obviously he was joking, it was more of a dream than anything. But who better to entrust dreams to?

“Oh, my love.” 

It was a rhetorical question at best. A joke in reality. Why did the agony in Emmrich’s response make that deep ache past his chest? Everything burned, lungs and throat tight. This wasn’t the time. All of this was fine. Steadying breaths. He was a Grey Warden after all. He lived content with dying since drinking from that cup. 

But no matter the reasoning of his thoughts, he couldn’t stop the shaking of his hands. So that route was hopeless. He swallowed hard, then…maybe?

“You know, that Warden, Isseya,” Rook didn’t get the chance to finish any further thought. He was suddenly devoid of Emmrich’s touch, the lich had jolted, reacted as if burned and turned his entire body away while bellowing a firm.

“No.” 

Rook flinched as if struck, he’d never heard such a harsh tone from Emmrich. But there was something underneath, something desperate. Pleading.

Don’t breathe the thought.

Opinion and thoughts on Emmrich’s questline’s last choice (with spoilers of course) :

How that choice stressed me the second the Liche thing was introduced… until when truly faced with it, it didn’t XD. I regret worrying so much but that’s in my nature (PTSD from Solas Romance and other stuff...). The second Manfred came into the picture, I was sold for one of the endings. I couldn’t imagine continuing the story without our beloved skeleton child.

With that said, I still played the two choices and the little wrapping quest after the choice. In the end, to me the whole choice felt like choosing between heart and mind. Here’s why:

- Emmrich becoming a Liche (the path of reason/logic)

In this ending Emmrich follows his dream/project. Just before you make the choice he is still very eager to become a Liche and barely talks about Manfred. I felt that’s what he really wanted and had worked hard for (contrary to other companion quests where other companions seemed less comitted to one choice over the other).

It is a more « selfish » (it’s a too strong word but I haven’t got a better one) ending and feels colder too. Emmrich follows his academic goals.

Rook and Emmrich’s interaction before the ritual made me a bit sad, like a farewell. The worry for Emmrich’s life and the unknown felt real. And when Vorgoth stepped out with the bloodied dagger, I felt a pang in my heart. The cutscene was very well done, every mortalitasi stepping out and suspense as Emmrich steps out last : he succeeded but changed forever.

Emmrich won’t have to face death because he succeeds in becoming immortal (he somewhat faces it because he could have died during the ritual but you see my point). When romanced, even if you can say it changes nothing to Rook’s feelings, that is obviously a big thing. It felt a bit too big for me for a romance that just starting blooming.

- Emmrich saving Manfred (the path of sentimentality)

To save Manfred, Emmrich will have to abandon becoming a Liche. He’s sacrificing something for Manfred, just like Manfred did for him. It’s warm and cute, and Manfred comes back with new magic powers. Plus you see the spirits of the first quest again which was a nice detail.

The first thing Manfred says when he realizes he’s got magic is « Magic, like you », showing he really admires Emmrich. That line killed me honestly, so heartwarming! The hug and the following scene with Rook are adorable, absolutely wonderful, and when in a romance with Emmrich it gives the family vibe that I personally enjoy very much. Father figure/teacher Emmrich does something to me… (I promise I don’t have daddy issues, I’m just getting older XD)

Emmrich will teach Manfred, pass on his knowledge to him, and somehow he’s giving his life to him since he turned down immortality for him.

Maybe it is selfish of me but I prefer this ending because Rook gets both Manfred and the same Emmrich as before. It feels happier. As Emmrich said when asked about his regrets: “I wouldn’t have it any other way”. This moment, with that sweet expression he made while watching Manfred discover the world again brought tears to my eyes. My heart was moved by this ending. It is by far my favourite.

Final thoughts:

I’m reminded of Baldur’s Gate 3 where the endings I preferred were those where the companions didn’t go through with their initial goals. It feels more like character growth that way maybe.

I’ll have to see if the other romances are as impacted by the final decisions of companion quests but I’m not sure. I didn’t feel like the other choices were that big (except Taash and Harding maybe) but maybe I’m wrong, I’ll see when I watch the other romances.

I’ll do another post soon about my overall opinion on the companions and their quests.

I absolutely do not regret choosing Emmrich’s romance, it made me feel lots of different feelings, and that proves it had me invested! It was very good. I hope there will be a few more scenes with him (especially a sexy one XD) because I can’t get enough of this lovely man!

So since Minala’s my Rook, she’s the protagonist. I think especially since people largely like Rook, she would be pretty well likes, but idk if you’ve seen it, but some people have also been insisting Rook is actually the worst ever and the real villain instead of that bald man so. It’d really depend lmao

I do think at the very least if she were made a companion instead of the PC, people would like her for her goth autistic vibes tho! She’d probably be slotted into the “brain empty goofy” thing everyone likes to slot Rooks in general into which is 100% inaccurate for her but it is what it is

I do fear her being autistic, wasian, and anxious may get her slotted into the delicate flower uwu baby thing despite her being a grown ass woman lol

I think Davrin mainly just bcs they’re best friends lol. My joking bonus answer would also be Anders bcs that’s my husband, but outside of that, idk. Maybe Myrna and/or Vorgoth bcs of the Mourn Watch associations?

🙈: Why would your ship be thought of as cute/fluffy? Why would your ship be considered problematic?

For the most part, I think people would like it! Especially with the Minala and Bellara relationship, I think that people would really like it bcs of the degree of connection and similarity they have with each other, that’s then balanced out with some opposites attract kind of stuff (ex Minala being raised by humans and Bellara being Dalish, Minala being quiet while Bellara is more outgoing and energetic)

I also know people just from telling me on here would like Emmrich x Minala bcs goth x goth- they’re lowkey Gomez and Morticia Addams coded when it comes to romance. Them coparenting Manfred would be so sweet, and especially since Emmrich’s been wanting to be in love for so long and hasn’t really found that one true love. I think it’s very sweet

Then Minala and Neve. I know I don’t talk about them a ton, and that’s bcs they get together post canon so it’s hard to talk about without spoilers. If you can guess by the fact that Minala romanced Bellara in the game itself, you can probably figure out a major thing that happens with Neve that then effects the relationship. So there’s a bit of angst there but I think that makes them getting together all the sweeter bcs it means they still have this very strong mutual trust. Minala makes it easier for Neve to see the bright side of things, and I think they bring out other sides of each other

However there is the elephant in the room and why I always get a little scared even on here talking about the polyam part of Gothic Sunshine, which is the age gap between Emmrich, Minala, and Bellara. All of them are fully grown adults- Bellara is 32 and Minala is 34- but Emmrich being 56 (unconfirmed but my specific hc based on the range we got) would be what would make people hesitate around it. And I know most people don’t tend to care about Rook x Emmrich, but I think that Bellara in the relationship specifically would be what would make people say it could be problematic. Especially with Bellara calling Emmrich professor at first (which she does bcs she first started talking to him over letters about academic things and she wants to be respectful), I think people would get weird about that

And that leads me into another related thing bcs again. Bellara is a grown, 32 year old woman. She is an expert in her field. She fixed an eluvian in minutes when people have studied how to do that their whole lifetime. Yet both the fandom and to some degree the game tends to infantilize her. You have no idea how much it annoys me that they just kind of treat her like a fan for Neve and Emmrich when she’s an equal to them, and yes I do think this treatment of her is bcs she’s an Asian woman with ADHD. Her relationship with both of them does shift in the game, and Emmrich calls out the imposter syndrome she has that’s part of why she acts that way, but then the game immediately goes to characterizing her in her dynamic with Neve as being sisterly bcs god forbid an Asian woman be treated like an adult and viable romantic interest. Rant over but yeah I do think that would also make people try to say the ship since it includes all three mages is problematic

Here's mine!

Rook: Juniper Aldwir, a dalish elf mage, I mostly went for the direct/aggressive dialogue options with a few of the more positive/nicer or joke-y options in companion convos. I went with the spellblade specialization and ended up loving it after a rough mage start. I also played arcane warrior/knight enchanter my first DAO and DAI runs though so. lmao. i have a type.

Faction: Veil jumpers! How could I not go with the scientific study of weird magic group... I've decided she's more on the geography and cartography side of the profession rather than mechanics/tinkering like Bellara, which is why she's not the one fixing the broken objects you encounter herself. I imagine she's the one drawing maps of all the places you go, making notes of interesting landmarks/items, etc. the crossroads drives her insane (bc it drives ME insane) because of the weird half reality half fade logic to the locations, travel, etc.

Companions/NPCs: My go to companion squad was Lucanis and Davrin or Taash for the best combos/fighting, and Emmrich because I enjoyed his comments/character a lot too. NPC wise, of course finally seeing FELASSAN!!! was great and he got so much more content and dialogue than I expected. was cheering every time i found another codex entry from him, and the Betrayal fight ruled. otherwise, like most everyone else i LOOOOVEEEE Teai & Viagos Divorced Energy... i'm obsessed. And then Antoine & Evka for actually wholesome, and Vorgoth bc idk wtf is up there but its sexy. but also THE CARETAKER what IS it... i have so many questions... that i will be filling in with weird headcanons probably. I also liked listening in on the two fledgling crows on the balcony who have a ton of unique banters, and a couple other npc banter points idk how to describe lmao. Romance: Lucanis my BELOVED obviously i am doing... an insane amount of lucanisposting lately... yeah I've got the full brainworms. even though the game itself was lacking in content my neurons are instead working overtime to try to fill in everything the game left out

Major decisions: I saved Treviso because Minrathous JUST had its turn being saved, shouldn't they like??? be mobilizing the ARMY they actually have over there by now??? they should have been better prepared idk what else to say. insane it got hit a 3rd time at the end anyway so i stand by my choice in picking Antiva. As for the companion endings, I felt most didn't really make a difference to me, with the exception of Emmrich. I kept manfred on this run becuase I was NOT ready to say goodbye to my gentle skeleton son 😭 next game i will romance Emmrich and make him a lich tho. As for the ending... I sent Harding to lead the second squad and Neve was the one who got mirror-kidnapped. Whcih did leave for an absolutely devastating post-Nightmare-In-Dreamland fade sequence where Rook suddenly had NONE of the companions she started the game with. Getting hit with losing Harding, losing Neve, and then the realization that Varric had been dead the whole time definitely makes for some angsty roleplay opportunity, though I do wanna replay it with Bellara in the final position just so I can watch her stand up to the gods, because i think that'd be pretty great. Ending-wise: I'm a Solavellan fool who's been pining for a real life decade now almost so I of course went for that lmao. I will play through all the other options just for the drama of it all, and probably come up with some adjusted exact sequence for how things go as a headcanon, but yeah.
